We have finally received results from Carrom Association of Maldives and we will be updating the other reports shortly.
India won the carrom World Cup played in Maldives defeating their arch rivals Sri Lanka 3-0 in a close match. All 3 matches were decided in 3 games. India's Srinivas Komaravelli and World Champion beat Sri Lanka ace Chamil Cooray 25-15, 21-25 & 25-7. Ghufran Muhammad beat the Nishantha Fernando 25-0, 9-25 & 25-9. Akash Vadamunji defeated MohamedHilmy 25-10, 23-25 & 25-15 to complete the victory.
For the third place, Bangladesh defeated UK 3-0. (Hafizur Rahman beat Karnal Abdin 25-18, 4-25 & 8-5 (W/O), Hemmaet Molla beat Ish Kumar 25-17 & 25-2 and Mohamed Ali beat Nazrul Islam 25-13 & 25-11).
In the semis, India defeated Bangladesh 3-0 (Ghufran beat Faisul Ahmed 25-7, 18-19 & 25-12, Srinivas lost to Hafizur Rahman 24-22, 7-25 & 24-18 and Riyaz Akbarali beat Hemmaet Molla 25-5, 25-13). Sri Lanka beat European Champions UK 3-0. (Chamil beat Nazrul Islam 25-8 & 25-4, Fernando beat Shuaib Ahmed 22-0 & 25-0 and Hilmy beat Ish Kumar (UK) walkover).
In the quarter finals, India beat Switzerland 3-0. (Srinivas beat Raphael Bollin 25-0 & 25-1, Ghufran beat Anders Illi 25-0 & 25-0 and Akash beat Peter Baumgartner 25-0 & 25-0).
Bangladesh beat the host nation Maldives 2-1 in a tough encounter. (Hafizur Rahman beat Shafee Mohamed 22-17 & 25-4, Mohamed Ali lost to Ahmed Hamid 11-23 & 19-25 and Hemmaet Molla beat Hassan Nazim 20-16 & 15-14).
United Kingdom beat Canada 2-1 in a close match (European Champion Karnal Abdin beat Louis Fernandes, one the best in North America, 19-21, 25-1 & 20-15 in an interesting encounter, Nazrul Islam lost to the veteran Francis D'Costa 16-10, 18-21 & 6-24 and Ish Kumar beat Anurag Chanda in a close game 18-16 & 25-12).
Sri Lanka beat France 2-1 in another close finish. (Fernando beat Mouraly Venou 25-4 & 25-7, S.Hilmy lost to the young Frenchman Pierre Dubois 15-17, 22-8 & 12-25 and Chamil beat Alfred Rajadurai 25-11& 25-5).
GROUP RESULTS
Group A:
India beat Maldives 3-0 and beat Korea 3-0. Maldives beat Korea 3-0.
Group B:
Bangladesh beat USA 3-0 and beat Switzerland 3-0. Switzerland beat USA 2-1 (USA’s Dr.Sivaram Gowdagere winning his match).
Group C:
Canada beats European Runners-Up France 3-0. (Louis Fernandes beat the European Runner-up Pierre 17-9 & 25-5, Francis D'Costa beat Venou 9-19, 23-18 & 25-5 and Anurag Chanda beat Alfred Rajadurai 25-14 & 20-18).
Canada beat Pakistan 2-1. (Louis beat Muhammad Faisal 25-0 & 25-0, Francis beat Ramzan Ali 14-18, 22-14 & 25-7 and Anurag Chanda lost to Muhammad Amil 14-20, 5-25 & 3-25). France beat Pakistan 2-1 in a close match.
Group D:
Sri Lanka beat UK 3-0 and beat Germany 3-0. UK beat Germany 3-0.
Team Champion Results:
India continued their dominance in the world of carrom. Their women's team won the World Cup defeating Sri Lanka 3-0.
Kavita Somanchi beat Roshita Joseph 25-4 & 25-0, World Champion Rashmi Kumari beat Chalani Liyanage 25-0 & 24-9 and Kajal Kumari RADM Kanchanamala 23-19 & 25-7.
India also beat Maldives 3-0 and Sri Lanka prevailed over Maldives 3-0 in the league matches.
